The 2025 Expat Insider survey puts Spain at the top of its Quality of Life Index — and the reasons go well beyond the weather.

Why people choose Spain

Moving country is a legal decision, but it is also a life decision.

In the 2025 Expat Insider survey by InterNations, Spain ranked first in the Quality of Life Index. The report says 84% of surveyed expats were happy with their life in Spain, compared with 67% globally.

Spain also ranked particularly strongly for weather, culture and nightlife, and opportunities for recreational sport.

Life after the residence card

For someone considering a move, these numbers matter because immigration is only the entry point. The real question is what everyday life looks like afterwards.

Spain combines large international cities, smaller coastal communities, extensive public transport, outdoor life and access to a major European market.

The balanced view

No country works for everyone. Housing pressure in some cities, bureaucracy, tax planning and language can all become important parts of a move.

That is precisely why the right question is not simply “Can I get a visa?”

It is: “Does this route support the life I actually want to build?”
